In a former submarine base, Culturespaces created Bassins des Lumières, the largest digital arts center in the world. Since 2020, they have presented monumental immersive digital exhibitions dedicated to major artists in the history of art and to contemporary art. Some of the past exhibitions have featured the works of Monet, Chagall, Renoir, Klee, Klimt, and Klein.
The facility was constructed by the Germans when they occupied Bordeaux in 1940 as a bunker for a fleet of submarines, giving them close proximity to the North Atlantic and vessels traveling between Great Britain and North America during World War II. The space is immense with fortified concrete walls and ceiling, steel support beams, reclaimed wood floors, and huge docking bays that now function as reflecting pools.
I experienced “Dali, The Endless Enigma” and “Gaudi, The Architect of the Imaginary,” plus a teaser for “Tin Tin, The Immersive Adventure.” Vivid, undulating, multi-dimensional visual projections paired with thematic music in spatial sound. It was exhilarating! I am so glad that my tutor, Nathalie, told me not to miss it.
All for now.
