Here are some tips and quips from my journey of self discovery.
There are a few apps that I highly recommend for international travel: Google Translate is essential, Moovit (despite the annoying ads) was the best for tracking my walking trips and correcting me when I was lost (so often!), Google Maps was always reliable, Rail Planner for real-time train schedules, WhatsApp to stay in touch with friends and family, and Trip Advisor to book tours and activities. I used Airbnb and Booking.com to pre-arrange my lodging and every location was a winner. The organization I chose that sponsored the Wildlife Conservation program in Zimbabwe is International Volunteer HQ. It was an extraordinary experience.
Learning the basics in the language of the country you will be traveling to is essential. It is a way to show respect when you greet or thank someone in their native language and, believe me, they will be more likely to help you when you do. I also suggest either memorizing or have an app to convert the Celsius scale and the Metric system.
I flew British Airways for the entire journey, World Traveller Plus. I couldn’t spring for Business Class but the Plus section does give you more leg room and that was key.
I spent a year planning the trip, 42 hours in the air, traveled 2,632 miles on 26 trains to 18 places, and countless buses to otherwise inaccessible villages. What an adventure!
“And you are?” says Reggie. “Let me give you a tour in case you forgot where you live.”
All is right in the world for Reggie. My adjustment may take a little longer.
Thank you for joining me on what turned out to be an incredible adventure. I was sad to end my journey but glad to come home to such a special place.
If you have questions for me, please email podchick@mac.com. I am happy to help.
All for now.
